Pine Beach West

Madden's Pine Beach West Course is a bit shorter -- a little over 5,000 yards from the back tees and about 4,500 from the forward -- but it's also long in character, according to the staff at Madden's. "It's more of an executive length," says Scott Hoffmann. "But it does require you to use all the clubs in your bag even though it's shorter."

Those who play it love it for its true greens, its parkland surroundings and its three-hour rounds. It's the perfect place to play to warm up for a round on The Classic or to finish off a day of other activities. "Seniors and women really love it," says Hoffmann.

This course was designed by Jim Madden, one of the founders of the resort.

Number Four on Pine Beach West is an excellent par-4, 415 yards from the back tees and 409 from the forward. "You need to keep your drive to the right half of the fairway and in front of a valley of grass that separates the fairway from the green," Hoffmann says. "If you end up down in that valley, you have a blind shot to the green."

Number Ten is one of the best par-4s in the Brainerd lakes area, says Hoffmann. "It's a 415-yard hole (366 yard from the front tees). You have what looks like a wide-open tee shot, but you need to be on the left part of the fairway to get to the green." That's particularly true since the trees on the right can be an obstacle.

Number 16 on this course is a real standout, a short par-3 that plays 126 yards from the back tees and 90 from the forward. What makes it a dramatic hole to play are the mature pines that stand around it, a boulder retaining wall in front of the green, and the water you'll encounter.

Distances, ratings and slope on Pine Beach West: 5,070 yards (64.9/103); 4,579 (65.2/103).
