Though the sport may be overlooked by many today, just a few decades ago croquet was a major attraction. In the 1980s, croquet was quickly gaining popularity in the United States, not just as a pass-time but as a competitive sport. Madden’s was quick to hop on the trend and built bent grass croquet lawns in 1983, which soon earned the resort the title of “Club of the Year” by the US Croquet Association. Madden’s formed a Croquet League that had about 26 participants at its peak in the late 90s.

Though the sport is not as popular as a competitive activity today, Madden’s continues to maintain the court as if it were ready to host a tournament. Madden’s croquet courts feature short-cut bent grass lawn and are set up for six-wicket, or American, croquet, which is a four-ball game of croquet.

Want to learn to play? Don’t be intimidated by the rules. Madden’s Tennis & Croquet Club staff will walk you through the game step-by-step.

In 1991, the Tennis & Croquet Club was built to house activity rentals and Parfecto Pizza, which moved from its previous location in the Emporium. The Tennis & Croquet Club has become the hub for many activities at Madden’s, including tennis, lawn bowling, pickleball, shuffleboard, bike rentals, and more.
